I ran across this article on MSN’s news site. With the help of the organization, Friends of Literacy, a 64-year-old man learned to read. After reading the article, I paused to think about how much I and we, as a society, take for granted the ability to read. I remember my mother working with me with Flash Cards before I even went to Kindergarten (there really wasn’t pre-school back then). Some of the most enjoyable times in my life have been spent reading; whether I was curled up on the couch, lying on the beach, or sitting in the sun on my porch, I can’t imagine my life without the ability to read. It’s something we take for granted and really need to appreciate what it must be like for someone who doesn’t know how to read.

The Literacy Coalition of Colorado takes applications for volunteers. When all this craziness of grad school and multiple jobs is over, I plan to find a way to give back. And I think this would be the perfect way to share my love of reading.
